AgHack 2019
Agri-Virtual Grand Challenge Hackathon

Background & Objective

Over the past two decades, the use of digital technology and ICT has ventured into virtually every facet of life. The need of the hour is to achieve improved and sustainable agricultural production while aiming to save costs, reduce environmental impact and ensure food security while maintaining the quality. In order to address the issues and challenges and exploit the potential of resources, it is essential to create an integrated and sustainable system of Information and Technologies for the sector. The program focuses on promoting the development of innovation and entrepreneurship in agriculture, especially by young people to create innovations that would empower smallholder farmers, and the communities that support them. Digital technology can accelerate the pace of developing and delivering sustainable and equitable solutions and enable Sustainable Development. Innovations and technological advancements would help narrow the knowledge gap between researchers and farmers; providing timely and targeted information to farmers to manage weather and market variability and integrating farmers into profitable markets.

The objective of the Hackathon is to stimulate young minds to come up with technology solutions that address these challenges and have the potential to positively impact farmers’ income, and overall agricultural performance.

Why Hackathon
The young generation is bubbling with ideas. The biggest challenge however lies in turning the ideas to practical solutions. With Hackathons, the aim is to come up with a feasible practical solution with proof of concept or working example or a model.
The hackathon program is designed to be open to students, entrepreneurs, budding researchers, young professionals. The larger the cross functionality, the more the mix of people with diverse backgrounds and expertise hence newer and wider perspectives to look at addressing a problem and develop solutions.
Data is everywhere. With Big Data and Data Analytics trending it is essential to have access to relevant information derived from the available raw data for usage.

It was a pleasure working with CII during the Hackathon and interacting with you all. In this creative journey of analyzing the problem area, conceptualizing the solution, design and development, we learnt a lot. It was also of immense value to interact with mentors, learn from their real world experience and get feedback on the solution. That helped fine-tune our final solution.

While working on the solution, Srihari, Prafulla and I became a great team as well. That was the most rewarding part of the journey.

Once again, thanks for the opportunity. Hope to see you all in AgHack 2020.
